After finishing fifth in its division for a second consecutive year, the Reds were awarded the second overall pick in the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft. The team selected high school pitcher Hunter Greene, who was lauded as the top prospect in the draft for much of the past year.

A 6-foot-4-inch, 210-pound player for Sherman Oaks, California’s Notre Dame High School, Greene was drafted as a pitcher, but is an all-around player who can hit for average and power. At just 17, he hit batting-practice homeruns in San Diego’s Petco Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field. He projects as an All-Star-caliber pitcher in the MLB, however, given his ability to throw the ball over 100 miles per hour and his command of three above-average pitches. On the mound, he has been compared to New York Mets’ ace Noah Syndergaard.
